This was the only thing I hadn’t done yet 🙂 I’ve been living and breathing these things for 10 days. I researched and read so much that I finally made my own makeup remover at home. It turned out great! It’s very simple and contains no chemicals or toxins that are harmful to our skin or body.
In the last two months, I’ve had chalazion surgery on both eyes. That is, cystic styes that don’t drain. Of course, as always, I started thinking, “Why did this happen?” I’ve always been the type of person who, probably due to my Functional Medicine training, tries to find the cause first and then solve the problem. There are many causes of chalazion, thankfully many people wrote about it on Instagram. During this thinking process, I realized that the makeup remover I was using was irritating my eyes. I only wear and remove eye makeup about once a week. Whenever I use that product, I get a lot of itching and swelling afterward. I used to think it was an allergy, but I put the pieces together; that product wasn’t good for my eyes, and I made my own makeup remover at home with completely natural ingredients.
I didn’t need a special cleanser because I don’t wear makeup on my face anyway; I just wash with water. However, I used a dual-phase makeup remover to remove eye makeup. Now that’s gone too.
Whether it’s foundation or waterproof mascara, anything on your face comes off in seconds. I’m also listing alternatives next to the ingredients.
* A teacup of drinking water
*
2 tablespoons cold-pressed sesame oil. I chose sesame oil for my skin, as I had some at home, but cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil, cold-pressed almond oil, or hazelnut oil would also work.
* 2 teaspoons Castile soap. I’ve read a lot about this in foreign sources; it’s called Castile Soap. It’s actually 100% plant oil, but it’s saponified through a special process. It contains no chemicals. Since we don’t have this here, I was looking for a substitute, and lo and behold, I found it at Homemade Aromatherapy. It’s a place I shop at anyway. I immediately bought one. A bottle costs 33 lira, and I think with this usage, it will probably last 5 years 😬 Now, this price might seem high for a soap, but even the cheapest makeup remover is around 20 TL. I don’t know how many bottles of cleanser I could make with this. I bought it right away and tried it, and I loved it, but you can use baby shampoo as a substitute. However, it must be a baby shampoo with very good ingredients, free of parabens, SLS, etc.
* 2 drops lavender oil. This is an ingredient that’s not essential. I added it because it’s antibacterial, soothes the skin, smells wonderful before bed, and I had it at home. It’s from Homemade Aromatherapy. Choosing the right oil is crucial; we absolutely need to make sure it’s from a good source.
I mixed all the ingredients in a jar. It had a wonderful texture. I shook it before using, dipped a cotton pad in it, and applied it to my skin in circular motions; it foamed up. I rinsed it off with water. Because it’s oily, it didn’t dry out my skin, I loved it so much. I use this soap for facial cleansing because it stings my eyes. If you use a tear-free baby shampoo, you can also remove eye makeup with it 🙂
