Today’s topic is diets, which are always in vogue.

As you may have noticed, many diets come to the forefront from time to time. The main idea of most of them is generally to reduce a specific food group. This might be protein, carbohydrates, or fat. But do they work?

If your goal is weight loss, since the body is disrupted from its routine, reducing a food group it has been consuming since birth can initially lead to weight loss. This is perfectly normal. Regardless of which food group is reduced, there’s a disruption in the metabolism. However, the reality is that sooner or later, the food group removed from the diet is somehow reintroduced. Sometimes this happens in a single day when you get bored and say, “Ugh, I can’t resist anymore,” and attack the food. If the diet is carbohydrate-restricted, we find ourselves gorging on pastries. Or, in another scenario, we taste small amounts, but each time feeling a little more guilty, secretly eating ourselves up. In the end, we’re back to square one. So, why?

Because our bodies need all macro and micronutrient groups. Period.

Without protein, fat, or carbohydrates, our cells cannot survive or function. You can think of these macronutrients as the foundation, columns, and beams of a building.

Then there are micronutrients… That is, minerals (calcium, potassium, phosphorus, etc.), phytonutrients (which we get from all kinds of colorful vegetables and fruits), and vitamins. We can think of these like the windows, floor tiles, and stairs of a building. If one of them is missing, we can’t live in the building, right? Maybe we can manage for 3-5 days, but that building cannot be our long-term living space. Our bodies are the same. If one of these nutrient groups is missing, this body won’t support us for many years…

Every nutrient group that is deficient in our daily routine slowly rots the building from within… Our hormones stop functioning. Reproduction, menstruation, and sperm count decrease… Intestinal problems, depression, and the onset of chronic diseases begin.

The important point here is that the nutrient groups consumed come from good sources. For example, instead of eating pastries because “our bodies need carbohydrates,” we could get them from fruits and vegetables…

Similarly, instead of eating french fries because “our bodies need fat,” we could eat almonds, hazelnuts, and walnuts…

Unfortunately, we rarely see people who maintain the same weight and health for a long time by following fad diets. If such a miracle were possible, would the world’s largest nations allocate a significant portion of their budgets to combating obesity and promoting health? The truth is always singular: healthy eating, a peaceful and positive outlook on life, and exercise…

And for healthy eating, we actually live in a country that’s like paradise. We have unlimited vegetables. People abroad buy cucumbers and zucchini individually. Some even put just one zucchini in their shopping cart because it’s so expensive and scarce… We can buy vegetables by the kilo, what a blessing…

The Mediterranean diet is actually the healthiest diet accepted worldwide. Everyone is trying to switch to this diet, but we don’t appreciate what we have.
